Wasootch Ridge

Wasootch Ridge is located in the northern portion of Kananaskis Country. You take highway 40 south into Kananaskis and it’s about 10 minutes from highway 1 on your left. There is a parking lot and overflow parking lot. If you want to avoid the crowds (and this hike gets VERY busy) then get there before 8am.

As always, make sure you dress appropriately and be ready for anything the outdoors can throw at you. Weather can be unpredictable and change at any minute. Respect the wildlife by staying at appropriate distances and stay on the trails in order to preserve the forest! For more information on each hike you can check them out on AllTrails.

The trail head is along the mountain in the center of the parking lot. There is a separate trail head to the right near the creek, but that is for rock climbing. The trail should head straight up the mountain right away. If you are not going straight up almost immediately, you are on the wrong trail.

You gain a lot of elevation at the beginning. I believe my fitbit said by the time it flattened out a little we had gone up ~250m already. You hike around the mountain a little as you continue up. From the beginning it looks like there are 3 peaks that you ridge walk to, but once you pass the third one you realize there are another two to go!

The trail is just over 15km which is the perfect length for a day hike! Make sure to bring lots of water and snacks!

I did this hike most recently in May. The trail was clear of snow except for a stretch of about 200m in the middle. So many people do this hike though so the snow was packed down really well and easy to walk over. The clouds kept creeping over the mountains so we did not get much sun but the temperature was perfect pretty much throughout. Once we stopped for lunch at the top it got a little cold so I recommend bringing a sweater, jacket, or toque along to put on once you reach the top, especially if you get cold easily.

Overall I really enjoyed this hike! There are a lot of up and downs as you walk along the ridge which is nice because you never know what peak is going to be the real top! On the way down we did take a wrong turn on the trail and ended up on a different trail to the parking lot. On your way back if you see the trail split, stay right (the original trail). It is much easier than the way we ended up going! Im excited to do this hike again on a sunny day!
